Intern Highlight Profile: Andre Lau
Posted in: News & Updates by Samantha Applewhaite on July 15, 2010
Hamilton, ON—As one of our Communications Assistants, Andre’s responsibilities include writing content for the Empowerment Squared website, expanding the social network reach of the organization through various social media tools, and assisting with brand control. Andre was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario and is a recent graduate from McMaster University with an Honours B.A. in Communication Studies and a Minor in French.
Andre enjoys working with youth. He has volunteered with the Scarborough Boys and Girls club as a counselor, taught swimming lessons to children for the City of Toronto and the YMCA, and taught English at an English Immersion camp in Quebec. Andre was interested in doing more to help others so when he saw the intern position at Empowerment Squared he knew it would be a perfect fit. He liked that Empowerment squared embodied the essence of helping others, especially youth, at a local and global level.
Some of Andre’s hobbies include bettering his French, cooking, trying new foods and exercising. Andre enjoys watching old episodes of The Simpsons and reading books from his favourite authors such as Philip Pullman, Eric Schlosser, or J.D. Salinger. If Mr. Lau had to describe himself in three words they would be outgoing, eager to learn, and patient, traits he has obtained from volunteering with various youth programs. If Andre were to be a kitchen utensil, he would be the Foreman Grill – a lean, mean, grilling machine. If Andre were to win the lottery tomorrow, he would pay off his student debts, split some money with family members, and travel around the world to new places or to some of the places he has already been such as other provinces in Canada, Cuba, or different places around the United States.
“I hope to learn as much as I can about how non-profit organizations work, and to help Empowerment Squared develop to its full potential since it’s a young and dynamic company,” says Lau. “Overall, I would like to use my writing to promote social awareness about issues that matter but are not given a voice.”
Empowerment Squared is constantly looking for enthusiastic interns who want to make a difference and join our team. For more information, please visit our Job Opportunities section for future employment and volunteer opportunities.
